IG

Iron Girls is an innovative after school program for 12-14 year old adolescent girls who would otherwise not have access to a CrossFit. Through the mental and physical strength required to complete a crossfit type workout, these girls would learn important life skills not only regarding health and wellness, but also the confidence to be able to assert themselves in life.

IRON GIRLS was created by Amber Beane, and in partnership with Becca Lee and Anne Squires in response to the childhood obesity crisis and the research that shows that girls feel most negatively about their bodies and are more likely to develop eating problems in adolescence (Attie & Brooks-Gunn, 1989). This is a crisis that needs to be addressed as these girls move into adulthood.

IRON GIRLS intends to create an environment where girls grow up valuing fitness and nutrition, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds are given the opportunity to improve their health, fitness, and personal development. After school, they go to CrossFit Asheville where they sweat alongside other members of their local community - firefighters, lawyers, doctors, businessmen, soccer moms, etc.

CrossFit offers a positive framework and community to help at-risk youth girls grow into stronger and healthier individuals- both physically and mentally. Working out and eating well become second nature, and they learn life lessons in a supportive environment as they learn to push themselves to work hard and strive for something greater while developing a sense of who they are and what they are truly capable of!
